This is applicable for a new joiner who is looking to start an NPS Tier 1 or a Tier 1 plus Tier 2 account. Where possible, we have tried to include screenshots from the eNPS portals, to make the task easier. We have done a series of posts on applying for NPS account, which you may find useful:

How to open NPS account online

eNPS Portal

NPS online account opening can be done through the eNPS portal. This portal is offered by both the CRAs – NSDL and Karvy. HDFC bank also offers you the option to open NPS account online on their website. But in this case, they link back to the Karvy eNPS portal and thereafter process is same as Karvy process. We are not aware of any other banks which offer the option to open NPS account online currently but please feel free to correct us in the comments section. (You might see some links for opening NPS account online via Aadhar, but those links are now defunct as we discuss next)

Aadhar card-based NPS has been discontinued

Earlier it was possible to open eNPS account using both the Aadhar and PAN card and you may still find both the procedures discussed at some places. However Aadhar-based authentication for opening NPS accounts has been discontinued since 1st December 2018, following a Supreme Court order against using Aadhar for establishing the identity of an individual. Do note though that this order is only applicable for use of Aadhar-based authentication in online modules. A physical copy of Aadhar card is still acceptable as a proof of identity while opening an NPS account offline at any of POP branches

eNPS registration using PAN card

Hence we only discuss the PAN card method for opening an NPS account. To open NPS account online using the PAN card method, your PAN must be linked with an active savings/current account with one of the empanelled banks. Alternatively, your PAN must be linked with an active Demat/ Mutual Fund/ Insurance, etc. account with any of the empanelled non-Banks. (For the list of entities empanelled with Karvy and NSDL, please see their respective sections below). This is needed because your KYC verification under NPS will be done by this Point-of-Presence by comparing the details that you have provided with the details that already exist with them.

Opening eNPS account - Step-by-step procedure

A large part of the process for opening NPS account online is similar across NSDL and Karvy. We list the common steps in the infographic below and then discuss them in detail. Portal-specific steps are discussed in the individual sections.

Steps for eNPS registration

A list of steps for opening the eNPS account online

Step 1: Visit Portal and select POP

The first step is to visit the portal and select the “New Registration” or “Join NPS” option. Here you are asked to provide PAN number, residential status (Resident of India /NRI) and the type of account that you want to open: Tier 1 or Tier 1 plus Tier 2 account. The final step is to select a POP (Point of Presence) who will do your KYC.

Unsure of the role of the POP? Check our posts on NPS details explained and also How to open your NPS account – an overview

You need to select a POP with whom you have an existing account. This can be a savings/current/demat/mutual fund/insurance or trading account. Note: In case you select a bank to do your KYC, then you might need to make the first online contribution through your bank account with them.

Step 2: Submit personal details

The next step is to fill in various personal details. The key here is to remember that all your details should exactly match the details that you have provided the selected POP while opening your account with them. This is because the POP will match the details that you have provided with your existing details with them to do the KYC.

The first step is to fill basic personal details such as name, mobile number, date of birth, email address, etc. After filling these,  you will get an Acknowledgement Number.  At this stage, if you want, you can pause the account opening process and continue later by using the acknowledgement number.

Next, you need to fill in more personal details such as a permanent address, bank account details. If you have chosen a non-bank POP, then you will also have to fill your customer details with them.

Step 3: Submit Investment details

After filling personal details, you need to specify how you would like your money to be invested i.e. whether you want to go for the Auto-choice or Active-choice options, the asset allocation, etc. We have done a detailed post on NPS investment options which you can check to answer these questions.
Applicants also need to provide the nomination details at this stage.

Step 4: Upload supporting documents

The next stage is to upload supporting documents. Both portals, Karvy and NSDl, have certain size specifications for the docs that you can upload. We specify these requirements in their sections. To make the application process faster, it is recommended that you keep the documents ready in these sizes for upload.

Step 5: FATCA declaration

If you are an Indian citizen, born in India and also an Indian resident for tax purposes, then you have nothing to worry about in the FATCA declaration. But in case you are a US person or one of your country of birth/citizenship/tax residency is not India, then you will have to provide your Tax Payer Identification Number(TIN) from the specified country.

Step 6: Make an initial contribution

The final online step is to make the first contribution payment through the Payment Gateway. The minimum contribution amount for Tier 1 is ₹ 500 and for Tier 2 is₹ 1000. This payment can be made through the debit card, credit card or Internet banking of any of the banks available on the Payment Gateway. There are two payment gateways available on both NDSL and Karvy: SBI e-pay and Bill Desk.

Do note that the Karvy website specifically states that if you have chosen a bank as your POP in the beginning, then you have to necessarily make this payment through the net banking facility of the bank selected by you.

Step 7: Print form and send physically signed copy

Once the payment is made successfully, a payment receipt along with a PRAN number will be generated. You can print it or save it as a pdf for future reference. There will also be a Transaction ID. It is important to note this ID because it can be used to track the progress of your application.

To complete the process, you need to print the completed application form, paste your photo on it and then send the application form to the CRA mailing address. We have given the mailing address of Karvy and NSDL in their respective sections. The form should be sent within 30 days of PRAN generation or else the PRAN will be 'frozen' temporarily.

But in this case, they link back to the Karvy portal and thereafter process is same as Karvy process that we have detailed above. The only difference is that your POP, in this case, is already selected as HDFC bank so you need to have an existing PAN-card linked bank account with HDFC bank.
